Basic Utility Providers in Shakopee
Several utility services in Shakopee are provided by private companies. Below is a breakdown of who provides what:

City-Provided Sanitary Sewer

The City owns and operates the sanitary sewer collection system. Sewer rates are set by the City Council and reflect the costs of operating and maintaining the collection system, as well as the charges imposed by the Metropolitan Council for treatment. Billing and collection for sanitary sewer services are handled by Shakopee Public Utilities on the same statement as water and electrical charges.

From May through October, sanitary sewer fees are capped at 115 percent of your March water usage, with a minimum cap of 5,000 gallons.

Sanitary Sewer Rates:
  • Flat rate per billing cycle: $4
  • City rate per 1,000 gallons: $.99
  • Met Council rate per 1,000 gallons: $2.89
  • Flat fee for unmetered residential, per billing cycle: $27.50
City-Provided Storm Water Drainage

Owners of all parcels of property in the City are charged a fee to cover the cost of managing stormwater runoff. The fee is based on the amount of runoff from the property and is determined by its size and land use.

The revenue generated by these fees is used for street sweeping and the maintenance, construction, and reconstruction of the storm drainage system in the City. As with the sanitary sewer system, rates are determined by the City Council, while billing and collection are handled by Shakopee Public Utilities.

  • Cost per Residential Equivalency Factor (REF) acre: $8.70
  • Residential Property (1/3 of a REF acre): $2.90
