Garbage & Recycling

City-Contracted Garbage and Recycling Service
City Code 51.03 requires that within the refuse/recycling service area*, the City’s contracted garbage hauler shall collect and dispose of refuse, yard waste, and recyclable materials from single-family dwellings, duplexes, and triplexes and all other residential dwelling units that receive individual curbside pickup of refuse.

The City's current garbage hauler is Dick's Sanitation, Inc. (DSI).

*Refuse/recycling area is defined as the area within the City's metropolitan urban service area (MUSA). If you're unsure whether your property is located within the MUSA, contact the City at 952-233-9300.

Additional Garbage & Recycling Information
Containers
Each household receives a City-owned or DSI-owned garbage cart and a recycling cart. Both carts have lids and wheels. Residents may choose (with rates charged accordingly):
  • 35-gallon
  • 65-gallon (standard recycling cart for townhomes)
  • 95-gallon (standard recycling cart for single-family homes)
Collection
Refuse is collected once a week; recycling is collected every other week. It is always on the same day of the week. Residents must have their refuse and recycling at the curb by 7 a.m. on their collection day.
Holiday Schedule
DSI observes the following holidays:
  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day
Service will be delayed one day starting on the holiday of that week.
Single-Sort Recycling
Shakopee uses single-sort recycling. Recycling is picked up every other week on the same day as refuse and should be at the curb before 7 a.m. All recyclable items can be placed in the yellow-lidded recycling cart. There's no need to bundle or sort.

How to dispose of items not accepted by DSI?
Clean Up Day is an annual event for residents to dispose of recyclable and non-recyclable refuse.

Scott County Household Hazardous Waste Facility accepts a variety of household and business waste.

Dakota Prairie Composting (formerly the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility) accepts yard waste and other compostable items. Service is free to Shakopee residents during the month of May.

Unused medication can be discarded safely through Scott County's Take It to the Box program.

Check out a list of regional facilities that collect or recycle a variety of waste materials. For more specialized materials such as appliances, batteries, construction and demolition debris, and other waste, please visit the Waste Navigator (scott.mn.us) for more information.
