Fire Inspections

The Shakopee Fire Department plays a key role in ensuring the safety of our community through fire code enforcement, inspections, and system testing.

Whether you're a contractor, business owner, or property manager, it's important to understand your responsibilities related to fire protection systems and occupancy requirements.

Use the information and FAQs below to schedule inspections, report hazardous materials, submit compliance documentation, and stay up to date with local fire safety regulations.
Fire Inspection FAQ
1. How do I schedule a fire inspection?

To schedule a fire inspection, call 952-233-9570 at least 24 hours in advance. Installers are required to be present during the inspection.
2. What’s required before receiving a Certificate of Occupancy?

For new construction, all fire and life safety requirements must be completed. Approval from both the Shakopee Fire Department and the Building Division is required before a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued.

For a change in tenant or use of a commercial property, notify the City to ensure compliance. No occupancy is allowed without an approved Certificate of Occupancy.
3. How do I report hazardous materials storage?

City Code 130.08 requires annual reporting of hazardous materials storage locations and inventories. Submit Tier II reports via email to: firesafety@ShakopeeMN.gov
4. What do I do if I need to take my alarm or fire protection system out of service?

Before performing any work or testing:

  • Notify your monitoring company and the Shakopee Fire Department
  • After work is complete, contact your monitoring company to reactivate the system
  • Notify the Fire Department at 952-233-9570 once the system is back in service
5. How often do fire protection systems need to be inspected and maintained?

Fire protection systems must be inspected, tested, and maintained regularly as required by code. Records must be kept on-site and a copy submitted to the Fire Department.
6. What is The Compliance Engine and how do I submit reports?

The Shakopee Fire Department uses The Compliance Engine (by BRYCER, LLC) to manage inspection reports.
Contractors must submit all reports—compliant and non-compliant—through www.thecomplianceengine.com.
