Tree removal in Huber Park begins March 6

Tree removal will begin in Huber Park along the Minnesota River on Friday, March 6.

The City's contractor, Castle Rock Contracting & Tree Service, will be removing trees in Huber Park for approximately two weeks as the first step in the larger Minnesota Riverbank Stabilization Project.

The 2026 Riverbank Stabilization Project includes stabilizing sections of the Minnesota Riverbank, flood protection for the City’s parallel sanitary sewer, native landscaping and ecological restoration, and parks integration improvements, including re-establishment of the historic Sweeney Marina.

All of the trees along the south riverbank extending from the Holmes Street Bridge to Market Street, along with many of the trees within Huber Park will be cut down and removed. The tree removal areas are outlined by black squares on the map below. Trees will be cut flush with the ground and either chipped on site or hauled off site.

Following removal of the trees, wood chips will be spread over the disturbed ground and safety fences will be installed in select areas. The tree removal is necessary to be completed prior to the end of March for the protection of endangered species that may be nesting in the trees.

The larger construction project will not begin until later this fall and continue through 2027. Please contact the Engineering Department at 952-233-9369 or engineering@shakopeemn.gov if you have any questions or concerns.
