Rental License

The City of Shakopee requires a rental license for all non-owner occupied rental properties in our community.

This license will ensure minimum maintenance standards are met, including proper heating, functioning appliances, lighting, smoke detectors, and that rodents and insects are not infesting properties.

As part of this license, every rental unit in the city will be inspected every three years. Properties that are identified as having ongoing issues will have ongoing inspections and may have the license revoked.

To apply for a rental license or to renew an existing license, visit the City of Shakopee ePortal. Please note, in addition to owner and rental manager information, the following items are required to be submitted as part of any application
  • Proof that property taxes have been paid in full for the current year and any other assessments, fines, penalties, etc. have been satisfied.
  • Proof of Hazard and Fire Insurance and Liability Insurance for the property.
  • Required license and inspection fees per the current City Fee Schedule.
Upon receipt of a complete application, staff will contact the applicant to schedule an inspection. The applicant is responsible for notifying and obtaining consent from occupants and providing access to all areas of the property or unit(s) to be inspected. Written notice will be provided to correct deficiencies. Once corrected, the applicant must contact the city for reinspection and will be responsible for reinspection fee(s). No license will be issued until all deficiencies have been corrected. Properties that have passed an inspection by another state or federal agency within the prior 12 months are exempt from the inspection requirement provided the owner produces evidence of a passed inspection from that agency.

Once issued, a rental license is valid for 36 months with annual renewal, unless revoked earlier.
