Shakopee Fire responds to fire at Dem-Con Materials Recovery Facility

Post Date:06/14/2019 2:10 pm

Shakopee, Minn. – Shakopee Fire Department responded to a report of a water flow alarm at Dem-Con Materials Recovery Facility, 13161 Dem Con Drive, Shakopee, at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, June 14.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find light smoke coming from the building and the fire sprinkler and suppression systems activated. After investigating, firefighters were able to locate the source and extinguish the fire. All employees in the building at the time of the incident evacuated safely. No injuries were reported.

Because the facility is protected by a fire sprinkler system, the facility was able to remain operational with minimal damage.

“This is a great example of why fire sprinkler systems are installed. Without such a system this fire would have been devastating to the business and the employees,” said Fire Marshal Tom Pitschneider.

Dem-Con receives commercial and residential single-stream recyclable material, which is then separated and packaged for re-use. The facility can process 20 tons of material per hour.

The Shakopee Fire Department is investigating the incident. Departments from Mdewakanton Public Safety, Chaska, Prior Lake and Savage provided mutual aid.
