Project Spotlight: 12th Avenue Reconstruction
This summer, 12th Avenue at Canterbury Road is getting some much needed attention as part of a reconstruction project to improve traffic flow and safety.
The city is reconstructing 12th Avenue from Vierling Drive to the County Highway 83 intersection. The purpose is to provide a roadway that will better serve the adjacent commercial properties (better access points to businesses), improve daily and event traffic flow and improve pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
City Engineer Steve Lillehaug said the aging street was scheduled for future reclamation and rehabilitation. However, the recent Canterbury Commons Areawide Transportation study identified the street as a major need to prepare the area for redevelopment of Canterbury Park.
- Reconstruction of street and utilities
- Construction of a roundabout at 12th Avenue and Vierling Drive
- Construction of trails and sidewalks
- Street lighting
Timeline: Construction is slated to start in spring 2019 and be completed by the fall.
Traffic Impact: Access to local businesses will be maintained. Closed to through traffic.
Cost: The estimated $4.3 million project will be reimbursed from the Canterbury Tax Increment Financing District, approved in 2018.
