The Shakopee City Council met Tuesday, Sept. 4. Among the meeting highlights:

EDA approves sale of several city owned properties

Acting as the Economic Development Authority, the City Council approved the sale of the four properties:

  • The former city hall site (129 Holmes St. S.) to Enclave Development in the amount of $250,000.
  • 16 acres located in the West Shakopee Gateway (Lot 1, Block 3) to Opus Development for $1.65 million.
  • Seven lots and several partial lots on Levee Drive to Gaughan Cos. in the amount of $750,000.
  • Four acres of property in the West Shakopee Gateway (Lot 1, Block 3) to Trident Development for $600,000.

Council approves the hiring of new Parks and Recreation Director

The City Council approved the hiring of Jay Tobin as the city’s new Parks and Recreation Director. City Administrator Bill Reynolds introduced Tobin, who has served as the City of Chaska’s finance manager since 2016. Prior to that, Tobin served in the military, where he held a support services role at Fort Campbell and then Installation Command. In his time with the US Army, he worked closely with service-members, their families and retirees to develop and implement recreation programs.  Tobin's first day with the city is Oct. 1. Council reviews 2019 tax cut as part of preliminary levy

The City Council reviewed the city’s proposed preliminary budget and levy for 2019. The proposed budget would reduce the city levy by $30,048, or 0.15 percent, and decrease the current tax rate from 37.971 percent to an estimated 35.231 percent. The city also proposed levying $350,000 under the Economic Development Authority special benefit levy -- the same as last year.

The council will be asked to approve the maximum tax levy at its Sept. 18 meeting. The final 2019 budget proposal will come before council on Dec. 18. Council approves security improvements to Police Department

The City Council awarded a $39,454.29 contract for improved surveillance cameras to be installed in the police department. Pro-Tec Design will install new cameras with higher image quality and improved storage. These cameras will be used to monitor suspects in holding cells, as well as protect evidence rooms from outside tampering. Shakopee Police also requested new keycard panels to improve ease of access to the building for employees. Council awarded a second contract for $2,884.39 from Pro-Tec Designs to upgrade three keycard panels. More information: Andy Hutson, IT Director, 952-233-9358.

MTVA presents yearly update to City Council

Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MTVA) presented the organization’s annual update to City Council. MTVA has reported two years of ridership growth in Scott County between 2015 and 2017, with more than 66,000 additional riders between 2016 and 2017. MTVA also proposed service adjustments to routes 490 and 493 to eliminate overlapping routes, save money and promote efficiency. Proposed changes would have little to no effect on riders. Additionally, MVTA plans to install a bus shelter near Walmart to better accommodate customers. The shelter is expected to open in November.
