The Shakopee City Council met June 20. Among the meeting highlights: 

Council approves West Vierling Acres apartment building

The City Council approved the rezoning of the property from R-3, Multiple Family Residential to R-4, High-Density Residential. Amcon Construction plans to construct a 133-unit market-rate apartment building east of the new Hy-Vee store. The council also approved a planned unit development amendment, conditional use permit for an over-height structure and the final plat of West Vierling Acres Third Addition for this development. More information: Kyle Sobota, senior planner, 952-233-9349.

Council purchases two properties along First Avenue West

The City Council agreed to purchase two downtown Shakopee properties for future redevelopment. The properties are:

  • 339 First Ave. W. (currently a vacant house) in the amount of $125,000
  • 321 First Ave. W. (currently a  parking lot and commercial building occupied by Doggie Doo’s) in the amount of $375,000

The city plans to combine the properties into a single lot and is working with CPM Cos. To develop a boutique hotel on the site. More information: Michael Kerski, director of Planning and Development, 952-233-9346.

City acquires railroad spurs due to tax forfeiture

The City Council agreed to purchase two parcels in the industrial park forfeited to Scott County for failure to pay taxes. The land currently contains two railroad spurs. By purchasing the parcels, the city will ensure future rail access to the park. The estimated purchase cost is less than $5,000. City teams up with developer for downtown redevelopment projects

The City Council agreed to enter into a partnership with CPM Cos. for two downtown Shakopee redevelopment projects. The city is looking to work with CPM to create a mixed-use development with market rate apartments on the current City Hall site, 129 Holmes St. S., as well as a boutique hotel in the 300 block of First Avenue West. Downtown building receives Façade loan for restoration

Acting as the Economic Development Authority, the City Council awarded a Façade Improvement Loan in the amount not to exceed $10,000 for the renovation of 110 First Avenue. The building owner, Duane Wermerskirchen, plans to install a new awning and expose more of the building’s original architectural details. A new tenant for the building is planned. Council approves underground utility relocation

Following a public hearing, the City Council approved ordering plans and specifications for Shakopee Public Utilities’ Shakopee Avenue Electric Underground Project. SPU plans to relocate overhead electric power lines underground for 39 properties along Shakopee Avenue. The project is anticipated to improve access and maintenance of the lines. The project, which will be done in conjunction with the 2017 Street Reconstruction project, is funded through property assessments and by Shakopee Public Utilities. MPRA AwardInclusive playground honored with Award of Excellence

The Minnesota Recreation and Parks Association recognized the City of Shakopee for the Shakopee Fun For All Playground project with an Award of Excellence in the Volunteer Initiative category. The submission recognizes the efforts of the Fun For All task force who made the playground project a reality. More information: Jamie Polley, director of Parks and Recreation, 952-233-9514. 

Council extends construction hours for Windermere development

The City Council approved suspending city code to allow extended construction hours for the Windermere development in west Shakopee. D.R.
