Clean Up Day recycling event is April 29

Updated: 04/25/2017

Shakopee Clean Up Day recycling event is organized every year on the last Saturday in April from 7:30-11:30 a.m. It's open to residents of Shakopee, Jackson Township and Louisville Township.

Trucks in a lineThe entrance behind the Shakopee Public Works building is usually easy to miss, but on Clean Up Day morning, the lineup of cars backs up down Fourth Avenue toward downtown Shakopee. Directions to the recycling event entrance.

The event began in the early 1990s when Public Works set out an unattended dumpster (or three) over the weekend for residents to drop off items. By Monday morning, it became a mountain of garbage for staff to sort through.

Now, Clean Up Day is a much more organized affair. Vehicles move through the line quickly as staff look over loads, take payments and hand out flyers. After passing through the north gates to the Public Works yard, electronics, tires and batteries are unloaded from vehicles first. Make sure you load these items into your vehicle last so they are easy to unload!

Truck getting rid of yard wasteAhead to your right, drop off any yard waste before moving to the center of the yard where garbage trucks will be lined up on the left. After stopping at the garbage trucks, look for the large roll-off dumpster and loader on the right to unload any appliances and scrap metal before exiting the event onto Gorman Street through the south gates.

One last stop for the free mobile shredding and then pat yourself on the back for the amazingly productive morning you’ve had and it's not even noon yet. What's next, day!?

Garbage TrucksRecycling expenses are funded in part by Scott County Environmental Services and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Local Recycling Development Grant. Remaining event expenses are funded by entrance fees and made possible by partners and volunteers.

Entrance fees are $20 per vehicle of recyclable items and $25-$30 per truck/trailer for garbage. Heavy and large items are an additional cost, such as mattresses, box springs, couches, console and rear-projection televisions, computer towers and CRT monitors. Questions? Call us at 952-233-9550.

We'll see you on Saturday!
