Inclusion for all

Updated: 06/11/2020

One of Shakopee Parks and Recreation’s lesser known services is a critical way our department makes recreation possible for all families – inclusion.

Inclusion provides individual participants with necessary accommodation to participate in Shakopee Parks and Recreation programs. Recently, a family registered for parent-child swimming lessons through our Aquatics program. For this class, the parent needs to be in the water working with the child under the instruction of our water safety instructor. The family requested an interpreter as they are deaf and use American Sign Language as their primary language. Our department was able fulfill the request through our recreation-specific translating service, so an ASL translator could be in the water with the family.

“We felt the process [of setting up inclusion services] was very painless and almost effortless,” the parents said. “It’s been a learning experience for the staff to use an interpreter, but everyone has been eager to learn and are very open to feedback. We look forward to enrolling our daughter in more classes, as well as our son!

"We would highly recommend Shakopee Community Center as an inclusive and open facility with friendly and warm staff.”
