Tax statements, valuation notices arriving in mail
City of Shakopee property owners will begin receiving their 2019 tax statement and 2020 notice of valuation from Scott County the week of March 25. The 2019 tax statement usually draws the most attention as it is the property owner’s tax liability for the current year. However, the 2020 notice of valuation is also a very important document that should be reviewed carefully by each property owner. This notice is used in calculating property taxes for 2020 and is based on your property's value as of January 2, 2019.
City staff often receive property valuation inquiries in mid-November when the proposed tax statements for the upcoming year are mailed. Unfortunately, at that time of year, valuations are finalized and cannot be contested. So, reviewing your 2020 notice of valuation at this time of year is important.
If property owners have questions regarding their valuation or classification, they should contact the county assessor’s office. The telephone number of the appropriate assessor is listed on the statement. For more information about the assessment appeal process, please visit the Scott County assessor’s website at http://www.scottcountymn.gov/332/Assessment.
The Scott County assessor put together a short video providing additional insight into your 2020 Valuation Notice.
