Championing Shakopee students
Last week, the City of Shakopee had the privilege of being officially designated as a Academies of Shakopee champion at Shakopee High School.
The city teamed up with Scott County to be co-champions of the Human Services Academy, which encourages students to look beyond themselves to serve others. Career fields include human development, psychology, education, legal fields, law enforcement and public services.
This unique partnership is one-of-a-kind among schools using the academy model, as Shakopee and Scott County are the only government organizations to be academy champions nationwide.
As co-champions, the city will provide in-kind learning opportunities, such as professional mentoring, in-class speaking, course development, job shadowing, teacher externships and student internships.
For example, the city has served as a three-year business mentor for students in the district’s Center for Advanced Professional Studies’ digital design programs. Staff also speak in high school classrooms and welcome students for field trips to city facilities.
Our hope is to use our staff’s expertise to provide students and teachers valuable educational experiences – all the while introducing them to opportunities available in government.
“We want to plant the seeds of public service in kids,” said City Administrator Bill Reynolds. “This is a great chance for students to explore careers they may not have otherwise known existed.”
The city has supported the academies model since the beginning, with staff serving on the steering committee to help guide the launch of the academies. For the city, championing for the school district is simply a good investment in the future.
“We are interested in supporting the school district in any way we can,” said Assistant City Administrator Nate Burkett. “We want students from Shakopee to have opportunities to grow and learn in the community and, hopefully, eventually return to us because their experience was so great.”
