Shakopee Fire places an emphasis on community relations

The Shakopee Fire Department has a long-standing tradition of involvement in our community. Most recently, the Fire Department participated in the downtown parade as part of Holiday Fest on November 30th. Firefighters decorated a fire truck, dressed up in our fire gear, and handed out candy to countless children that came to watch the parade.  This included participation from many of our spouses, children, and our department mascots: Firefighter Joe and Sparky. Many firefighters stayed to view the tree lighting ceremony, fireworks, and to socialize with residents and friends.

This was a nice break from our typical community interaction which tends to be focused around fire and life safety education. This includes fire station tours, firefighter visits, child safety seat checks, fire prevention week activities, daycare visits, senior living public education and home fire safety checks. For firefighters these activities are important and meaningful. They allow us to open our organization to the community, communicate what we do and engage as active community partners and neighbors.

In Shakopee every firefighter is a member of this community. We live here, raise our families here, send our children to local schools and have many family and friends living here as well. We have a vested interest in this community and we participate in these activities because we are proud of the work we do.

Our reputation in Shakopee is an important element of the overall success of the department. Thank you for allowing us to serve.
