An award is great, but it's just the beginning.
In Nov., Shakopee’s Finance Department was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from GFOA of the United States and Canada. This prestigious award is given to state and local governments for their efforts to create comprehensive and user-friendly year-end financial reports. This is something Shakopee has taken great pride in, as we have received this award for 33 years in a row.
The Certificate for Excellence was developed to encourage city and state governments to go beyond the generally accepted and minimum requirements of financial reporting. Instead of simply providing numbers and figures, the GFOA encourages governments to provide context in the spirit of full disclosure and transparency.
One of the core tenants of the Finance Department is transparency. We understand that you, the residents and businesses, pay taxes towards the operation of this city. As such, our goal is to make information about the city’s finances accessible to residents and to give you a chance to be a part of the budget process.
Receiving this award validates our efforts toward that goal, but that’s only part of the picture. We provide monthly financial updates to the City Council, we hold open sessions for our annual budget and we share information about our finances through Shakopee’s various news outlets.
We invite you to be a part of the process and we welcome your thoughts. The proposed 2019 Budget is available for review now. A public input meeting is scheduled for Dec. 4, with final approval slated for Dec. 18.
