Election season reminders
Election season is upon us, and as we’re gearing up, here are a few reminders for candidates and residents:
Filing for city office: The City of Shakopee has three seats on the November ballot: One mayor and two City Council seats. All are four-year terms. Filing opens July 31 and runs through 5 p.m. Aug. 14. Candidates can file with the City Clerk at city hall, 485 Gorman St. The cost of filing is $5.
At the time of filing, the candidate will receive a packet of information concerning campaign signs, a campaign manual, financial reporting information and other pertinent information. Anyone interested in learning more can also find the information on the Minnesota Secretary of State website at www.sos.state.mn.us/election-administration-campaigns/become-a-candidate.
Campaigning: Individuals running for office or working for a candidate can campaign without a solicitor’s license. While candidates are exempt from the solicitor’s requirements in city code, we do ask candidates to be respectful of residents. For example, please consider respecting residents’ no soliciting signs and conducting your campaigning between the hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Social media: To maintain a fair environment for our candidates, please note all comments posted by any candidate who has filed for office will be removed from city social media sites. Similarly, our comment policy prohibits comments and links that express support for or opposition to political campaigns and ballot measures.
Campaign signs: Yard signs supporting political candidates are subject to the city’s sign ordinance and thus prohibited from public right-of-way. Please ensure your campaigns signs are placed only on private property (with the owner’s approval) and are removed after the election season.
Register to vote and early voting: Save yourself time on Election Day by registering to vote in advance. You can register online at www.sos.state.mn.us/elections-voting/register-to-vote. Early voting for the Aug. 14 primary election is now open at the Scott County Government Center. Stop by during open hours to cast your ballot. (Voting is not available at city hall.)
Election dates: The primary election is Tuesday, Aug. 14. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Please note, there are no city races on the primary ballot.) The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 6. Polls will also be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Election judges: There is still time to serve as an election judge! If you’re interested, please contact the City Clerk’s office at 952-233-9300.
