It's time for spring cleaning
UPDATE: Beginning June 1, SMSC will no longer be collecting tree brush/logs for free. Residents will be charged a fee, except during special Sunday drop-off times in April, May, September and October. We updated the blog to reflect this.
It may not seem like spring is around the corner with the recent snowfalls we have received, but it’s coming. With spring comes a renewed energy to move on from the long winter and enjoy the next season. With that said, we are very fortunate to have some great local programs to dispose of those recycling and trash items laying around your house.
The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) has partnered with the cities of Shakopee, Savage, Prior Lake and townships within Scott County to offer free disposal of yard waste and tree brush/logs at its Organics Recycling Facility. The 2018 spring event will be each Sunday, April 8 through May 27. (The fall event will be from Sept. 2 to Nov. 4.) Each city sends one employee to assist with drop-off each week, and on peak weekends Shakopee will send two as it typically has the most participants.
In 2017, the Sunday recycling program served 5,024 vehicles. We continue to learn lessons and strive to keep wait times down on peak days, but we appreciate your patience on those busy days. This program continues to grow each year. Check their website for dates and times of operating hours.
The City of Shakopee, in partnership with Scott County, will host the annual Clean Up Day event April 28 from 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. This is another great option for residents to dispose of unwanted items in a fast-paced, friendly event. See city website for details.
In closing, some residents may have trouble handling these types of items. Please consider helping your neighbors, elderly or handicapped and anyone else if you’re able. You will both feel good and someday the shoe may be on the other foot.
