#AsktheCity: Garbage rate increase update

Updated: 12/21/2017

Two weeks ago, we received questions from community members regarding their increased garbage and recycling bills. Many residents identified higher-than-anticipated collection increases.

We followed up with Republic Services and identified a billing error. While disposal fees will increase in 2018, it appears residents were also charged for the increase for the months of November 2017 and December 2017.

We’re pleased to say Republic Services has agreed to reimburse residents for November and December. You should see the credit on your next quarterly statement. Republic Services is also combing through all Shakopee residential bills to identify any additional billing issues.

Please note, monthly collection rates will increase beginning with January 2018 service. Due to factors outside Republic or the city’s control, residents should expect to see a $2.50 monthly increase beginning with the month of January 2018. Read more about the rate increase in a previous blog post.

We want to thank our residents for bringing this billing issue to our attention. If you have additional questions, please contact Republic Services at 952-941-5174.
