The City of Shakopee is on a Jan. 1 through Dec. 31 fiscal calendar. The city administrator collaborates with City Council and city departments to develop the annual budget to ensure the city continues to provide quality public services to our residents and businesses at a reasonable price. 

2017 Annual Budget

The City Council approved its 2017 tax levy, calling for a 7.47-percent increase from 2016. Thanks to increased tax capacity and commercial/industrial growth, the levy is anticipated to have minimal impact on the average Shakopee homeowner. In fact, the median value home ($229,100) will see a small reduction in their city taxes of $9.49.

2017 BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS

  • A tax levy increase of $1,316,146, or 7.47 percent from 2016. The increase will be fully directed toward debt payments, including the addition of the Community Center expansion project.
  • Four new staff positions – one by the Police Department and three by the Parks and Recreation Department. The police are looking at adding an investigative assistant to assist with increased workload. The Parks and Recreation positions are due to the expansion of the Community Center and Ice Arena.
  • Except for personnel costs and internal rent, departments were held to no increase on general line items.
  • An increase in sanitary sewer rates for 2017. The budget includes an 8-percent increase in the flow rate from $2.24 to $2.41 per thousand and a $0.50 increase in the flat rate from $6.00 to $6.50. For an average home utilizing 6,000 gallons of water a month, the increase will amount to about $1.52 per month.
